Magnetic monopoles

Magnetic monopoles will be introduced as an example of solitons. The monopole charge resulting in the topological stability of this soliton will be introduced and special emphasis will be given to the fact that this charge is simply the winding number encoded in the Higgs field. It will be indicated how this construction, which is given in 3 dimensions, can be exctended to all higher dimensions.
