J/psi suppression in hot dense matter and application to heavy-ion collisions

J/psi suppression was suggested by Matsui and Satz (1986) to be an unambiguous signal of quark-gluon-plasma formation in heavy-ion collisions experiments but is debated ever since. We review the results for J/psi production in experiments at CERN SPS and Brookhaven RHIC and the status of their theoretical understanding. The investigation of J/psi, psi' and D-meson production under conditions of high baryon density will be a major goal of the CBM experiment at FAIR Darmstadt, starting 2015. We outline the basics of a quantum field theoretical approach to this problem which will be developed in detail within a PhD Thesis project at the IFT.
