Chiral effective field theory of nuclear forces (WARNING: Notice unusual time for neutrino seminar)

In two seminars I will give an introduction to the modern theory of nuclear forces in its formulation as an effective field theory (EFT) based on chiral perturbation theory. First, I will review the phenomenology of nuclear potentials in nucleon-nucleon scattering and give an introduction to chiral perturbation theory of low-energy QCD. Second, I will explain the concept of an effective field theory in its application to the two-nucleon problem and derive the nuclear force in this context. An outlook is given to chiral EFT for nuclear matter and its applications to neutrino processes in matter.
