On the usefulness of string theory in condensed matter

We will embark on a journey to ponder the question whether an over four decades old theory of supposedly everything, which still has not been able to produce a single testable prediction, can nonetheless be useful for something. I can't promise any definitive answers, since this is still an area of vigorous research, but I will attempt to present the state of the art, how it works and what it's all about.
