Probing QCD phase diagram with fluctuations in Heavy Ion Collisions

The QCD medium exhibits a chiral cross over transition from a hadronic phase to a deconfined quark-gluon plasma. We will show that measuring fluctuations of net proton number one can probe such transition experimentally in heavy ion collisions. We present theoretical arguments based on the universality and scaling theory. We will also quantify the net baryon number fluctuations within chiral models based on the renormalization group method. We compare our predictions with recent data obtained by STAR Collaboration at RHIC.
